We would like to extend a warm welcome to existing & new members to Salisbury Tennis Club & hope you will have an enjoyable season. Our Club continues to be one of the best in Wiltshire & our Committee work hard to ensure our facilities remain first class.
On the social side we have the Tuesday evening social, weekend play, & a variety of social "competition". Bank Holiday afternoon doubles events will be advertised to sign up for. As well as the mid-summer BBQ, we hold supper evenings at the Club so watch out for the dates! We have a licensed bar & changing / shower facilities.
Our current projects include extending the Clubhouse & adding lights to Court 10. Fundraising is very important to help bring these projects to fruition although grants / loans will also be sought. Junior tennis & coaching remain a very important part of the Club & its future.
A continued high standard of coaching delivered by Lee Mahony, our Head Coach & his assistants has enabled the Club to retain its Performance Accreditation. As always Junior players are accepted & encouraged to join in with the adults in both social & team tennis.
The Summer League season starts mid-April so keen match players may wish to come along to the Thursday evening & Sunday morning sessions.
There are teams for all ages & abilities from under 10 to over 55 years of age! There are Junior, Ladies, Senior, Veteran, local, regional & national competitions & leagues in which we regularly enter teams, singles & doubles. We have an excellent record of achievement at all levels. It has always supplied many County players for Wiltshire, at veteran, senior & junior level.
We have a completely open access membership policy & new members are always welcome. And you can play for free on your first visit & any visitors fees you pay can be deducted from your subscription when you join.
You can access the Membership Form on-line, simply click on the link above, print form off & send in with the relevant amount. Brief History:
The Club was granted a lease on the land in 1895 & records show by the 1930's there were 9 grass courts & 2 shale courts.
The wooden pavilion had gas mantles for light, cold running water & "Elsans" for toilets.
1958 Junior coaching sessions in the school holidays were started, which was a great step forward.
1962 A new pavilion of cedarwood was built & included a small bar & kitchen facilities.
1977 Hard court improvements started with 2 all weather courts replacing the shale.
1982 2 of the grass courts were converted to "Playdek" all weather courts with floodlights, followed by another 3 hard courts in 1988.
1987 Extra land was purchased to make another car park.
1999 Final 4 grass courts replaced by 3 American Clay, 2 of which are floodlit.
2002 Mini Tennis courts created.
In 1969 the Club entered the Hampshire & Isle of Wight League. The highlight being the Ladies winning Division 1 in 1992, 1997 and 1999. The Men reached Division 1 for the first time in 1999.
In 1995 we reached the National Finals of the Silk Cut competition for non-County players. In 1998 & 2000 we reached the semi finals.
The Ladies were in the top flight of the National Club League since its inception in 1992 to 2006, apart from 1 year. The Men played in Div 1 in 2005.
We have a very active junior section with various coaching & training squads and in 2002 were awarded National Accreditation & as of a result picked up the Wiltshire LTA Club of the Year for 2002.
